Colorado’s 2023 Hailstorms: Essential Steps for Homeowners

Learn These Important Tips to Navigate This Year’s Hail Season

After some relatively quiet storm seasons here along the Front Range, 2023 has already been packed with large, damaging hail storms. If you live in the Denver area, chances are you’ve found yourself scheduling a roof inspection (or two) to check for hail damage.

At Elite Roofing & Solar, we’re no strangers to Denver’s typically active hail season. We navigate the storm damage repair process frequently—but some homeowners may not have had to do so for the past couple of years. So for those in need of a refresher, here are a few essential steps to take when your home is hit by hail.

Know the Signs of Hail Damage

Hail can severely damage most types of roofs, but asphalt shingle roofs are especially vulnerable. Still, while metal and tile resist hail damage much better, they’re far from immune. Depending on the type of roof you have, there are a few signs of hail damage you can look for that signal it’s time for an immediate roof inspection:

  • Asphalt shingles – Cracked, dented, or missing shingles all point to hail damage. You may also look for excess asphalt granules in your gutters or on the ground near your roofline.
  • Tile roofs – While tile is an extremely durable roofing material, roof tiles may crack when hail is large or dense enough. Look for broken tiles on your roof or pieces of tile on the ground near your home.
  • Metal roofing – Metal roofing may receive dings and dents from hail. While this detracts from your roof’s appearance, most insurance providers won’t provide coverage if the damage is merely cosmetic. However, a roof inspection is still in order to ensure no major damage was done.

Schedule a Roof Inspection for Hail Damage—Before Filing a Claim

Whether you see obvious signs of hail damage or not, it’s always smart to schedule a roof inspection following a major hail storm. A professional roofer will be able to determine the extent of damage, along with what—if any—repairs will be necessary.

Completing a roof inspection for hail damage will also help you determine whether filing an insurance claim will be necessary. In many cases, hail damage is not substantial enough to warrant a roof replacement. In fact, only 42% of inspections we complete lead to a filed insurance claim. Inspecting beforehand will save you the wasted time and effort of a denied claim.

Choose a Local, Trusted Roofer for Hail Damage Repair

If repairs or a roof replacement is necessary following hail damage, be sure to do your research before choosing a roofer. Hail storms sometimes bring out the worst types of roofing scam artists—those who promise immediate, cheap repairs, but leave you with a poorly built roof that will fail prematurely, with the roofer nowhere to be found.

Instead of working with storm chasing roofers, we always recommend choosing a local, established roofing company that you can trust. Local roofing companies have greater accountability, understand roofing codes and regulations, and just generally provide more reliable service compared to out-of-town roofers.
